How can you decide whether a project is worth doing?

  • #task Introduction for project page. #p/ffw

We can think of a "project" as anything we might want to do that has a particular aim in mind. Getting fit, writing an article, painting a picture, decorating a room, planning a party... all are examples of projects.

But there are only so many hours in the day, so how can we decide which projects are worth devoting time to?

Whenever I'm considering embarking on a new project, I ask myself five questions:

  • Interest
    • Does the project excite me?
  • Impact
    • How significant and beneficial will the results be — to me, to others, or to the world as a whole?
  • Insight
    • How much will doing the project increase my skills or knowledge in a way that enables me to do bigger and better things in the future?
  • Income
    • What reward will I get (money, satisfaction, etc.) for doing the project?
  • Investment
    • How much of my time, money, and other resources would I have to put into the project, and could they be better spent elsewhere?
